Gaultheria shallon (Salal)

Very common understory shrub of the Northwest forests.

Salal is a nice evergreen shrub that can sometimes be used as a groundcover although its height is variable from one foot to over 10 feet tall.  It spreads slowly by rhizomes but is easy to control.  Salal likes moist, acidic soils, but will grow well in most soil types in sun or shade.   The leathery, dark green leaves are often used as decorative foliage and in floral arrangements.  It has attractive pink, bell shaped flowers followed by dark purple berries that are a favorite of a variety of wildlife... and many humans also consider it tasty.  Please contact us with availability and prices.
